Internet Safety

The Internet is a wonderful tool used for education and personal entertainment, plus businesses all over the world can join forces to provide the most cost effective methods for manufacturing, trading, and selling their products and services.

However, the Internet is also a virtual world full of dangerous, manipulative individuals who prey on the young and innocent.

Keep in Mind...

  • Children do not need a computer in their bedrooms. If a computer is in a child's room, make it a "house rule" to always keep the bedroom door open while the Internet is being used.
  • If possible, set up your computer where the family can share it and the parents/guardians can easily monitor what the children are doing.
  • Password protect your computer from children logging on when parents/guardians are not home.
  • If your children visit chat rooms or set up a "My Space" account, check their pages carefully and monitor the feedback they are getting. This also applies to the messages they are getting on their cell phones.
  • Discuss Internet safety with your children. This is vital for them to make intelligent and responsible decisions, especially if they are at a friend's home and a computer is being used.
  • Make sure your children understand to never share personal photos or their contact information over the Internet with individuals they do not know.
  • Talk to your children about the benefits and dangers of the Internet.
